I’m Julia Marino, a third year PhD candidate in the History of Science program. I am running for Vice Chair to give back to Lakeside and to help foster a sense of community togetherness during the COVID 19 pandemic.
I have a great deal of prior experience that I believe will help me serve in this role:
As an undergraduate, I founded the Thought Project Living Learning Community at Dartmouth, whose mission was to build a vibrant, diverse community of students committed to exploring ideas. There were 70 residents in the community by the time I graduated, and we hosted a variety of events each week including a student-faculty dinner, a social event (like canoeing, mini golfing, hikes, cabin overnights, movie nights, baking nights, game nights, etc.), and a student-led discussion. There were 8 members of the student leadership team, and we together managed a budget of $10,000 per year from the Center for the Advancement of Learning (similar to the McGraw Center). Learn more about the Thought Project through this video: https://dcal.dartmouth.edu/news/2018/10/thought-project-living-learning-community.
After college, I worked for one year at Dartmouth as a Program Coordinator in Residential Life. In this role, I collected and analyzed data to assess Dartmouth’s newly established House Community System (which is similar to Princeton’s residential college system). I assisted with organizing events and initiatives for Dartmouth’s Living Learning Communities, and I supervised three undergraduate Residential Assistants. I also collaborated with fellow colleagues on Dartmouth’s Inclusivity and Diversity Community to coordinate training programs for Residential Assistants and to launch and administer Dartmouth’s House Community Social Justice Grant.
All in all, I love getting involved in building community, and I would strive to make a meaningful contribution to graduate life at Lakeside. Please email me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you have any questions. If elected, I am excited to work as a team with other Lakeside Committee members and to get to know the residents of Lakeside through my service in this role.
