Lakeside Apartments Committee

Secretary : Sara Sussman

Hi! My name is Sara and I am a G4 in the Physics department who is running for re-election as your secretary. I have served on the Lakeside Committee for one year so far and it has been a fun and fulfilling experience for me!

My main campaign promise last year was to respond to your emails promptly within a 24 hour period (send any and all questions and concerns to lakesidecomm@princeton.edu!).  I largely succeeded in that promise, and it was a pleasure to help coordinate solutions for you. I also was happy to volunteer at the Lakeside events last year, such as the Graduate Student Appreciation Lunch and the Lakeside Lemonade/tour the garden event. Finally, I enjoyed participating in new committee initiatives such as the Lakeside Book Club.

In the coming term, I have a few ideas for how to make communication more seamless for residents at Lakeside. Firstly, I will foster a more active and organized utilization of the Lakeside GSG Slack channel as a resident resource. Over the past couple of years, we’ve seen this increasingly become an important avenue for residents to ask questions or communicate their concerns, and I believe that the Lakeside Committee should take a more proactive role on this medium. Secondly, we’ve seen a couple of major maintenance issues/power outages last year that were disruptive and concerning to residents. While the Lakeside management did their utmost best to respond in a timely manner, it was sometimes difficult for them to give timely updates because they were focused on resolving the issues as quickly as possible. As Lakeside Secretary, I will try to fill some of those gaps by playing a more proactive role to become a conduit between the facilities staff and the residents during these times.
My other organizational experience includes being one of the leaders of the Princeton Women in Physics group since my G1 year, being a lab instructor for several intensive undergrad lab classes at Princeton, and maintaining the Wiki for my lab. These jobs all require me to coordinate and organize large amounts of information.

Being the Lakeside Secretary has helped me connect to the community in new ways and it has allowed me to feel productive and helpful even when research in the lab is going slowly. Although a secretary’s work can be largely behind-the-scenes, I was able to gain a lot of experience and familiarity with Lakeside, the University and the graduate community that I believe will allow me to be an even more productive secretary in the coming year.

Thanks for reading! Feel free to email me at sarafs@princeton.edu if you have any feedback or if there’s anything you’d like to see the Lakeside Secretary take on in the 2021-2022 year.
